I started speaking to her the instant I found out she was there. For nine months I spoke to her. She listened. Upon her arrival, awestruck by her salient eyes and unblemished face we covered her with conversations of admiration. Happy she was here to hear. Over the months that followed she started speaking back. Baby words propelled out of her mouth at the appropriate time. Mama, Dada, Gigi, Mimi, Gee See, PopPop, all were there. Quickly we caught “Tank You Mama!” “More Milk?” “Daddy Do It?” She often sings “Happy Birthday to Josie…” and last night we had our first real conversation. She was standing on a stool brushing her teeth. I bumped my toe.
“What happened Mama?”
“I hurt my toe”
“Ohhh, you otay?”
“Yes, I am fine”
“Otay Mama. Hug?”
And I had no words. Just hugs.
