Independence and Freedom

Over the weekend, as a nation we celebrated independence and freedom. As parents we celebrated lack of the same.

Independence at our house is putting your shoes on by yourself, brushing your teeth without help and walking up the steps unassisted. You can hear freedom ringing when a naked toddler sprints down the hallway to the bath tub and when both girls are sleeping at the same time.

It’s true, having children has taken away part our independence but more importantly it has given us the freedom to love more deeply than we ever imagined possible.

And I would never want to be independent of this...
